Below from left to right Topshop striped hooded denim jacket; Asos navy rain slicker parka; and MiH indigo denim hooded laced parka provide the perfect outwear for this nautical trend.

Cos stripes plus silk posh T for easy summer wear - pair it with this J Brand frayed and pleat bleached skimpy mini.  The mini is super stretch with degraded edges and slight worn grinding details.

Continuing the free spirit of summer denims with this Jack Wills gingham rucksack, Zara crops for guys and the MiH nautical Cowl top.

Zara are showing us again that they are one of the leaders when it comes to summer infused denim while this bleached out waistcoat from Saint Laurent styled with nautical stripes lends itself well to a Nantucket aesthetic.

Trend Direction: SHARP PERFORMERS

Wear It - Sharp Performers

Wear tight high stretch jeggings at ankle skimming lengths for maximum movement. When the water resistance has disappeared on your coated commuter jeans re-spray with Teflon spray. Wash your dark proofed jeans infrequently, if at all! If you think they need refreshing put them into the freezer overnight to eliminate bacteria.

Performance blends of cotton with other fibres enhances the efficiency of the denims and therefore the comfort of the jean.

Anti bacterial treatments such as Silvadur keep your jeans fresh all day. Teflon coating repels water. Coolmax releases moisture from within. Myabi, Acor and Thermalite keep you warm in your jeans. Denims plus performance enhancing technologies are a must to fit the modern lifestyle.  Look out for the hang tags proclaiming the added benefits.

Two brands proclaiming their performance enhancing innovations are Replay and Levi. Replay's Hyperfree® fabric, is on the cutting edge in the world of denim. It promises to ensure comfort and freedom of movement while retaining an authentic and fashionable look, while their innovative Hyperflex® technology combines lycra, polyester and cotton, preventing the fabric from stretching or losing its shape with wear and ensures complete freedom of movement and an authentic denim look. We also have Levi's Commuter™ collection which is "Built to Ride". The collection is defined by five key features; advanced fabric to stay dry, added strength for durability, stretch engineered for comfort, dual action temperature control for added comfort in the elements, and thoughtful design with performance built features for cycling.

Ripping, repairing and fraying combined with contrast fabrics and prints.  Mix, match and play with unusual combinations of denim and other fabrics.

Trainers or boots are the preferred footwear and fringing is a must for accessories.

Trend Direction : RIPPING AND SHREDDING

Wear It  -  Ripping and Shredding

Oversized mid weight Paige denim shirt artificially "aged" with holes, rips and shredded areas. Looks very "worn in" but sufficiently aged to be classy fashion.

Cool over emphasised ripping and shredding as demonstrated by two of the best brands for on trend denim and jeans. Just click the images to access their sites.

Either extreme high end or high street denim fashion, both demonstrate a different side to the trend. The Diesel example is super creative and has "I want it now" written all over it.  Can we persuade Diesel to make these for women? Whilst the Zara girls culottes are none the less desirable given their discrete hem shredding.

Worn and torn areas on jackets are harder to pass off as heavy duty wear but when carefully placed they can take on the attitude of a design.

How to fringe denim : Slice up in equal thin strips about ½ cm-1cm wide from the hem of your skirt or waistcoat to approx. 10 cms.  Keep it neat and clean. Machine a line of stitching across the top of the fringe line to prevent tearing. Trim the fringes straightacross the bottom.

How to fray denim : Cut across the weft of the fabric. Shred away the weft threads from the warp to the desired length of fraying. To prevent any further fraying machine stitch across the top of the frayed edge and heated with scissors across the bottom of the frayed edge.

Below are some great high street and high end examples of the trend.

Open up bigger holes at the knees and thighs of oversized worn jeans to show your skinny legs beneath. Only use non stretch jeans for such style modifications. Even cut larger chunks of denim instead of shredding the weft away from the warp threads.
